Dear St. Bernard Families,

There are some definite perks teaching and working in a Catholic school.  One of the most obvious is the opportunity to attend Mass during the week with all of the students.  This past Wednesday the students really stepped up their participation in Mass.  The lectors read wonderfully, the choir sang beautifully, the servers were attentive, it was a wonderful example of why a Catholic education is different by design.

In the classroom we try to meet the student where they are and encourage them to push themselves beyond their comfort level.  We offer opportunities that they would not get elsewhere, one of the most important is the opportunity to attend Mass.  I am extremely proud of our students and their participation in Mass this week.  It showed that they too, are grateful to attend Mass during the week.  Thank you to all of our parents who believe in what we do.

Harvest Hoedown Music Dinner –  October 27th from 5:00 – 7:00 in the school gymnasium.  Mr. Heydinger and the students will be at it again, performing for the attendees of our annual music dinner.  This dinner raises money for the music program and has allowed us to buy drums, music and other musical instruments.  Please make plans to join us. The menu is pulled pork sandwiches, macaroni salad, baked beans and various desserts. It is sure to be a wonderful experience for your ears and your tummy!

Dress code for Harvest Hoedown is Jeans, flannel or plaid shirt, cowboy hat and boots if you have them.  Please do not go out and buy things just for this program.

Head Lice – We will be checking your child’s hair periodically during the month of October and once a month there after to prevent an outbreak of head lice.  If your child contracts head lice, they cannot come back to school until they are nit-free.  I know that this can be a hassle but that is the policy up at Buckeye Central too.  It is very common for children to contract lice in the early elementary grades.  It does not mean that your house is not clean or that your child has done something wrong.  However, if your child contracts lice, you will have to wash clothing and bedding as recommended.  Thank you for your cooperation.

Parent/Teacher Conferences – A Google Form link will be sent out to you within the week so that you can sign up for conferences.  After we receive these we will send home a confirmation of your appointment time.  Mrs. Penry will be available after 4:30 on those days and on Wednesday.

Can We Colonize Mars? (cont.) – The K-1 students began the design process on Wednesday and Friday by defining the problem; Explorers need a spacesuit for Mars.  They will attend a seminar on space that will be given by the 6th-8th graders that will help them refine their designs.  The 3rd – 5th graders will also be attending this seminar to gather information for the construction of their biospheres.

Peace to you and yours,

Mary Obringer
